From the fight against polio to clean water, healthcare, education, and local economic development, Rotary's work touches lives across the globe. Today more than 1.2 million Rotarians belong to over 35,000 clubs in more than 200 countries, united by the motto Service Above Self.
It began on February 23, 1905 in Chicago, when Paul Harris gathered professionals from different backgrounds to exchange ideas and build friendships. That spirit of fellowship and service still defines Rotary today.
Rotary's areas of focus include promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, supporting maternal and child health, expanding education, and growing local economies. Clubs design projects in these areas; the strongest receive support through Global Grants from The Rotary Foundation.
